Aimed To Facilitate Modern Lighting Across Africa
Approximately 500 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa do not have access to electricity; therefore, they must rely on candles and kerosene lamps which can be very harmful to one’s health. Hence the IFC and the World Bank created “Lighting Africa” aimed to facilitate modern lighting across Africa.
The implementation of compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs) are examples of modern off-grid lamps that are in the process of being more accessible to households and small businesses. These sources of light are being implemented to the population in Africa that is not connected to the electrical grid.
With the help of modern lighting, people have the opportunity to go out at night which enhances safety and creates a sense of security. It also allows small businesses to stay open longer, expand production, and improve working conditions. Not only is the Lighting Africa initiative beneficial to those who lack electricity in Africa, but it also creates a new market for a profitable business opportunity in the lighting industry.
